Apleona HSG Facility Management has received a further two Green Apple Awards for Environmental Best Practice, making that an impressive 16 such accolades for the business in just nine years.
The Green Apple Awards lie at the heart of the annual campaign to find the greenest companies, councils and communities around the world.
Working together, Apleona and client GVA competed in the awards against more than 500 other nominations. In a ceremony held at the House of Commons, the two companies collectively received Silver and Bronze awards for initiatives that helped reduce energy and have a positive impact on the natural environment, respectively.
At Fishergate shopping centre in Preston, a scheme to replace traditional incandescent light bulbs with Light Emitting Diodes (LED) technology in the Christmas display resulted in an 85% reduction in the amount of energy used and fewer associated greenhouse gas emissions.
The new lighting scheme ran from 9th November 2017 to 6th January 2018 for a total of 571 hours and meant that energy used was just 1.08 MWh (Megawatt hours) compared to 9 MWh for the previous festive period.
At Rusham Park, a multi-tenanted science park in Surrey, a plan was developed to reinvigorate and improve the site’s natural flora and fauna, while providing a quiet, natural space for staff working day-to-day in a busy indoor environment.
The project created a grass meadow, improved aquatic management, invasive species control, the establishment of a wormery and even a ‘Bug Hotel’ to provide shelter to various invertebrate species for hibernation and nest building. This has had a knock-on effect with increased numbers of bird species on the site including heron, robin, wrens and owls; as well as enticing moles into the meadow and away from the manicured lawn area.
James Thoden van Velzen, Apleona UK and Ireland Chief Executive Officer, said: “The Green Apple Awards are world-renowned and instantly recognised as demonstrating a company’s commitment to supporting environmental best practice. Therefore, to receive our 15th and 16th such awards is testament to the continuous improvements that we as a business have made and will continue to make in this area.”
