Apleona Workspace helps Leeds charity to provide a ‘Home from Home’

A charity providing an invaluable ‘Home from Home’ for families with seriously ill children in hospital is “over the moon” after Apleona Workspace came to their rescue during a recent refurbishment project.

Located just minutes from Leeds Children’s Hospital, The Sick Children’s Trust’s Eckersley House offers families somewhere to stay, free of charge, while their children undergo treatment.

Through the provision of 23 bedrooms, 15 bathrooms, three kitchens, play rooms and even a laundry; The Sick Children’s Trust helps to ensure that loved ones don’t have to continually leave their child’s side to go back and forth to home while they are in hospital.

Jane McHale, Eckersley House Manager, explained: “During our recent refurbishment project I was speaking with a contact at another charity regarding the huge costs associated with removing old, unwanted furniture. I was worried that we would have to hire a skip but she mentioned that I should speak Terry Cowling at Apleona as someone who could possibly help us out, so I did just that explaining that we were looking to remove 22 beds and 23 bedroom chairs.

“The best I was hoping for was a discounted rate on the service but when he said they would do it for free I was over the moon, especially considering the work involved in bringing the beds down from the top floor.

“As a charity that relies entirely on donations, this was an unbelievable gesture of kindness from Apleona. It gave us peace of mind, it meant that we saved money and that we could make sure the rooms were ready as quickly as possible to give more families a comfortable place to stay as the team were really flexible regarding when they could help us.

“We really can’t thank Apleona enough for making this possible.”

Terry Cowling, Apleona Workspace Operations Director, said: “Moving furniture is our ‘bread and butter’ and our teams are very experienced at doing this safely and efficiently, so when the request came in from The Sick Children’s Trust we were delighted to help.

“All of the furniture that we removed from Eckersley House was recycled, with none of it going to landfill, so not only did it help with their refurbishment project but it also had no negative environmental impact.”

Jane McHale continued: “At Eckersley House we provide a vital service, offering families from across a wide geographical area somewhere to stay close-by while their child receives essential hospital treatment. Without having a ‘Home from Home’, families would have to pay for hotels if they could afford it or even sleep in their cars to be with their child, rather than facing long journeys to home and back.

“We receive no government funding at all and rely entirely on the generosity of donations and the support of others. This is what makes donations such as this from Apleona absolutely invaluable.

“Terry has told us to get in contact if we need any further help and we’ll definitely be doing that!”
