Apleona are supporting the Million Mile Clean campaign – to help make the UK a cleaner, greener place for everyone to enjoy!
The campaign encourages individuals, businesses and community groups to collect rubbish in their local area.
Running throughout the year, the Million Mile Clean aims to inspire, empower and support 100,000 volunteers each year to clean the places they love, to connect with likeminded people, and enjoy the great outdoors!
Apleona’s litter picks provided a great opportunity to team up with colleagues and make a tangible difference to local areas whether that was a local park, street, beach or river, as well as get some fresh air and exercise in!
We organised 10 litter picks across the country, inviting employees to get involved. Each event took from one to two hours, and in total we collected a whopping 77 bags of litter, with 79 employees taking part. Some odd items were found along the way – a multitude of single shoes, a number of items of underwear (!), a baby dolls arm and a car wheel guard. A combined distance of over 112 miles were covered by foot.
Shabana Ahmed, UK Procurement Manager said that the London office litterpick was particularly fun: ‘It was tipping it down with rain on and off so we had to take cover at one point in a bus shelter! The office is very close to the River Thames and we were shocked to find an area literally covered in rubbish – mostly plastics and likely from where the tide brings the plastics in. It took no time at all to fill our rubbish bags and it felt like we only dented the surface.’
Katerina Robinson, Apleona’s Sustainability Manager comments: ‘Apleona employees showed a great team spirit, and the participation in this campaign exceeded our expectations. This is such a fantastic campaign to support. We all felt a sense of satisfaction seeing the difference we have made to our local areas and many of us are keen to do this again.’
Apleona would like to thank our preferred supplier Nationwide Hygiene sourced over 70 litterpickers at short notice to enable us to be able to take part in this event.
